Covid-19: is a new symptom discovered?

Covid-19 continues to unravel its mysteries. A new Spanish study has added a new symptom of the disease to those already known.

Previous studies have confirmed that most patients have recurring symptoms. Therefore, most patients complain of fever, cough, or shortness of breath. In detail, 96% of patients suffered from one of these symptoms. A loss of taste and smell was also soon added to the long list of annoyances.

According to the results of a recent Spanish study, Covid-19 may manifest itself differently. As part of the new research, the scientists examined 21 patients in a Madrid hospital who had rashes and confirmed Covid-19 cases. A third of the patients suffered from red spots on the mucous membranes, a skin rash called enanthema. All the patients with rash-like spots were between 40 and 69 years old. According to studies, these oral lesions and spots on the palate could be a new symptom of the disease.

Two weeks after symptoms.

The researchers found that a third of the Covid-19 patients who had rashes on their arms and legs also had rashes on the palate. The findings of this study were published in the journal Jama Dermatology. "Despite increasing reports of eruptions in COVID-19 patients, it is difficult to establish an etiological diagnosis," the authors report. And to add: "However, the presence of enanthema is a strong clue that suggests a viral etiology instead of a pharmacological reaction, particularly when it comes to a petechial model (it is a red to purple spot that does not change color when pressed) is observed."

In detail, the study states that these spots generally appeared approximately two weeks after people first experienced more known symptoms of the disease. The team at the Ramón y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid recommends that doctors and nurses periodically examine the oral cavities of patients with confirmed or suspected coronavirus to see if they also have these signs.

Finally, the Spanish team explains that many patients with Covid-19 are not examined inside the mouth due to contamination problems if they expel the drops that carry the virus. Therefore, it is quite possible that many patients will experience these skin signs without being diagnosed by a medical team.

According to the authors of this study, this is not the first time that the enanthema has been observed in patients with Covid-19, such symptoms have already been observed in Italy.
