The Brazilian president claims to have a "clear conscience", unlike the governors he calls "dictators."

Jair Bolsonaro has a "clear conscience." Despite the high price that Brazil paid on the Covid-19 front - almost 100,000 deaths - and despite criticism directed at his management of the health crisis, the Brazilian president does not seem determined to make a mea culpa. If there are irresponsible leaders in the country, he said during a ceremony broadcast live on social networks, they are rather the governors of Brazilian states, described as "dictators."

"We have a clear conscience. With the means at our disposal, we can say that we have done everything possible to save lives," said the far-right leader on Thursday night. During this ceremony, Bolsonaro signed a decree that allows exceptional spending for the production in Brazil of the vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford and the AstraZeneca laboratory.

"We regret all the deaths, we will reach 100,000, but life goes on and we have to find a way out," the head of state said a few hours later, during his weekly broadcast on Facebook.

The merits of hydroxychloroquine

Bolsonaro has also accused the governors of certain states of inflating the numbers by asking doctors to blame the deaths on Covid-19 without conducting an autopsy. "I do not know what their interest is, but some governors have given these guidelines (to doctors), causing panic," insisted the Head of State.

The president also called governors and mayors who have taken containment measures "dictators", which, according to him, are the cause of the increase in unemployment, with a rate of 13.3% in the second semester, the highest of the last three years. "Nearly 9 million jobs were lost in the second quarter. Some mayors and governors are responsible," he said.

Himself infected with the virus last month, Jair Bolsonaro, 65, has continued to downplay the illness he describes as a "little flu." On Thursday, he again praised the merits of hydroxychloroquine, a controversial drug whose efficacy against Covid-19 has never been proven.
