Invented in the world of sports and business, coaching now concerns all areas of daily life.

Coaching is personalized support for professional or personal purposes. The goal of the coach is to help the coachee to develop their potential and their know-how in a given sector: professional, school, sports, that allow them to develop their intrinsic qualities (skills for team management, resistance, self-confidence, sense of organization) and / or achieving a specific goal (quitting smoking).

Help and not cure

Coaching is support, not psychotherapy training or treatment intended to respond to suffering.

If it is therapy, it is called "wellness therapy", a tool for personal change that can help the individual to:

- pass a difficult course (dismissal and search for a new job for example, but also promotion and assumption of hierarchical responsibilities);

- Develop personal qualities that allow you to fulfill yourself in your personal and / or professional life. In the latter context, slimming coaching, relooking.

Coaching, how does it work?

The coach mobilizes and directs the resources of her client respecting her personality. It helps you assess your own values and beliefs, whether they are motivating ("I have the level to compete in this competition") or disabling ("I cannot train regularly").

The coach must know how to identify and master the way relationships are established and developed according to conscious or unconscious objectives. You must use "metacommunication", which consists of being a partner and an outside observer during interviews with the coachee.

The coach, an ally and not a mentor

The coach should not impose her will on the coachee, or substitute her own reading grids of society, business life or sport, for those of the client.

There is no reason to see a "transfer" type of bond established between the coach and the coachee. Also, no subordination or dependency should be established. The coach is a team member, a coach (in the sporting sense) but not a chef, much less a parent. Your goal is to empower your customer. The coach must have a code of ethics, display it and respect it.

How is a coaching session developed?

The approaches are by definition very flexible, as the coach and the coachee come together to work on adapting the latter to a particular circumstance. The first session allows you to define your desired goal. Then, during the interviews, the coach listens, questions, and confronts. You can also seek to provoke your customer to provoke reactions.

When you intervene by phone (as part of coaching to quit smoking, for example), you invite the client to reconnect with their motivation to support their will. The trainer can also use approaches such as NLP (neuro-linguistic preparation), systematics (analysis of relationships forged in a group), relaxation, role-playing. Each coach has their own techniques and skills.

Sessions last from one to three hours. They should not be extended for more than one year. On the other hand, it happens that the client maintains contact with her coach to take stock once a year for example.
