Whether it's a problem with the prostate in men, cystitis in women, or early kidney failure that affects both sexes as they age. We will see what plants are used as natural medicine.

Blueberries are the best known plant that works against urinary disorders, but there are others. We tell you everything about its benefits, instructions for use and contraindications.

From a certain age and exclusively in men, the bladder enlarges and prevents the adequate flow of urine. Therefore, in cases of benign enlarged prostate (or prostate adenoma), the evacuation of urine (urination) is more laborious, more frequent, sometimes imperative, especially at night when it causes at least three awakenings. A consultation is essential to confirm the reality of this problematic condition and rule out the possibility of cancer.

Willow herb, to facilitate the evacuation of urine in men

It is in cases of benign hypertrophy that willow, an herb with small flowers, is indicated for its richness in tannins (enotein), flavonoids, and plant sterols that promote prostate decongestion. The plant inhibits the activity of an enzyme that enlarges the gland, it also exerts an anti-inflammatory effect.

How to use: Herbal tea form is suitable before 5 p.m. so as not to compromise the quality of the night. Dose? A nice pinch for a cup that you pour into boiling water. Make an infusion on the fire, and rest 15 minutes before filtering. Drink a cup a day, for two to three months.

Precautions: May increase the effects of certain medications such as blood thinners, including warfarin, anticonvulsants, or digoxin, a tonicardiac.

Bearberry, anti-infective in women

Its leaves contain its active ingredient of interest, arbutin, which, once transformed by intestinal bacteria, releases a urinary anti-infective compound, hydroquinone. Bearberry also contains iridoids, anti-inflammatories, flavonoids and tannins that protect the wall of the bladder.

Instructions for use: take in the form of dry extract capsules (versus vegetable powder, less concentrated), at a rate of 6 capsules (250 to 300 mg each) per day, for 8 days. "To facilitate the hydrolysis of the active ingredient, it is advisable to alkalinize the urine by drinking a liter of water during the day, to which a teaspoon (2 to 3 g) of bicarbonate has been added.

Precautions: contraindicated in pregnant women.

Blueberries for recurrent cystitis in women

Only one species of bilberry, native to North America, has been validated for the prevention of urinary tract infections: Vaccinium macrocarpon. Its fruits contain proanthocyanidols (CAPs) that inhibit the adhesion of intestinal bacteria that cause infectious cystitis (colibacils) to the bladder. Thus, it prevents or at least decreases the frequency of recurrent urinary tract infections.

How to use: the recommended dose is 36 mg of PAC per day, for a treatment of 2 to 3 months.

Precautions: it can interfere with certain medicines whose metabolism passes through the cytochromes, coenzymes that speed up or slow down their action, such as the anticoagulant warfarin.

The orthosiphon to activate the kidney function.

This diuretic plant accelerates the elimination of water thanks to its flavonoids and phenolic compounds that stimulate kidney function. Therefore, it is used in men and women to increase the volume of urine in case of difficulty urinating and early kidney failure. Orthosiphon is also useful in gout because it helps to better remove uric acid derivatives. It is recommended between two attacks of renal colic or to resolve premenstrual water retention, for example.

How to use: the ideal form is herbal, leaf and flower tea. Pour 3 pinches into a liter of boiling water, infused for 15 minutes, before straining and drinking throughout the day. Another more practical option is dry extract capsules (200 to 300 mg each), at a rate of 2 to 3 capsules per day. Take 10 to 15 days a month.

Precautions: reserved for adults. Do not use it during an attack of renal colic and, in case of kidney disease, talk to your doctor first.
