Excitement, nervousness, palpitations After how many cups of coffee do you have to say stop? the experts answered this question in the columns of Madame Figaro.

Start a new day without drinking a great coffee? Impossible for many of us. But we know that in too high doses, coffee can quickly damage our health and lead to sleep disorders, tremors or even chronic anxiety. However, keep in mind that when consumed reasonably, coffee becomes a real health asset.

In 2015 the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) ruled on this issue. "A healthy adult should not exceed 200 mg of caffeine at one time and 400 mg during the day. In other words, one and a half cups of coffee at a time, and four to five during the day. If we stick to this moderate consumption, all the scientific literature considers that there are no harmful effects on health, "writes the organism. These recommendations apply to all caffeine-containing products such as tea, soda, and energy drinks, among others.

Pregnant women

Also according to EFSA, pregnant women should limit themselves to 200 mg of caffeine per day. Consuming too much caffeine can cause problems with the development of the fetus. "It is even better to prefer the decaffeinated version of the drink, or even consume herbal teas. The baby does not know how to metabolize caffeine, so he feels the effects directly", explains Laurence Plumey, nutritionist doctor.

"Of course, people prone to sleep disorders should also limit their consumption, as well as people prone to digestive problems such as heartburn, gastritis or reflux," she adds.

Espresso or filtered coffee?

But are all coffees the same? "Contrary to popular belief, espresso contains less caffeine than filtered coffee; it basically comes from the brewing process. Therefore, we can drink more espresso during the day," specifies Philippe Pouillart, research professor in culinary and health practices. at the UniLaSalle de Beauvais Polytechnic Institute.

"In moderate doses, coffee stimulates the central nervous system, which reduces the risk of developing Alzheimers. It also stimulates alertness and reduces drowsiness," adds the professor. You will understand, once again, that everything is a matter of balance.
